Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier
A sunny day and we headed for the Southern Alps. Hiking to the terminus of the Tasman Glacier at the base of Mount Cook was one of the best experiences we had. It was a beautiful trail through fields of alpine lillies. The terminus lake filled with small bergs of ice and the water is glacial blue.
As we looked across the canyon we could hear explosions. We expected to see helicopters dropping dynamite to break loose the potential avalanches. Finally we saw what looked like a teaspoon of sugar falling on the mountains across the valley. We could see the snow hit the ground below just as the thunderous roar came again. That obviously was not a teaspoon of snow if it made that kind of noise.
